It has been a long time since I’ve been able to just ride the story of a novel like this. Landragin is a smooth writer with enticing enough prose that kept me engaged and never really took me out of it.
Some of the dialogue toward the last third (I read in the Baroness sequence) was a little eh for me but it’s in line with the epic nature of the story.
A lot being said here to parse out about the leaders we devote ourselves to and why (whether they are figures or philosophies). It similarly considers levels of punishment as a branch of that in a way I’ll be thinking over.

This book can be read two ways. I read it the conventional way, front to back, so now I am giving serious thoughts to reading it the other way.
Interesting concept, need to read it physically -a kindle won't cut it

Beautiful and vivid writing, but the story really didn't do it for me. Unpleasant characters (that you never get to know well), a problem with an unclear solution, confusion with who is who and when.
This story structure is unusual and could have lent itself well to a big unexpected revelation in the end, but it didn't get there.
Perhaps read this if you like a philosophical pondering on the worth of a life... or perhaps on religion and the destruction it can cause.

I read this book using the Baroness' order. If you do this, my most important piece of advice is to NOT pull out your bookmark by mistake! :)
I always find it difficult to follow multi-character, multi-timeline stories because every time there's a switch of either one it can take me a page or two to catch up. Adding in the fact that I couldn't go back a few pages to refresh my memory, well, let's just say the book didn't flow for me very well. Now, if I'd been able to read larger chunks of it at a time it might've made a difference, but that's life.
I enjoyed getting to know the characters, and the thought of being able to trade bodies and lives with an individual simply by looking into their eyes for an extended period of time was interesting. Especially in these days of masking when you often need to look someone closely in the eye to determine their mood.

4,5⭐ Storia di due anime è un libro che assolutamente definirei non per tutti, una di quelle storie che o senti tua o che ti annoia pur riconoscendone il valore dietro.
Per fortuna a me ha catturato fin da subito forse perché di queste storie lente, oniriche quasi, finisco irrimediabilmente innamorata ogni volta. Se apprezzate il realismo magico avrete più probabilità di amarla.
La particolarità di questo libro è che si può leggere in due modi: il primo è quello standard ovvero da pagina 1 a pagina 400; il secondo è quello della Baronessa che consiste nel passare da un capitolo ad un altro del libro.
Poiché Storia di due anime si struttura come tre libri, tre racconti a sé ma in qualche modo correlati e poiché è un libro abbastanza piatto di azione io vi consiglio il metodo La Baronessa. Probabilmente vi potrà creare confusione all'inizio ma dall'altra rende il romanzo molto più dinamico e ti permette di seguire molto meglio la storia e gli intrecci.
Di che parla questo libro? Parla di due anime, due anime predestinate l'una all'altra così come predestinate ogni volta a perdersi e ritrovarsi. Una capace di ricordare, l'altra solo a dimenticare. Ma si arriva ad un punto che il lettore non riesce a capire quale sia la condanna peggiore.
È una storia d'amore, di perdita, di vendetta e di espiazione. Una storia che trascende il tempo e lo spazio. E tanto basta sapere.
Ho apprezzato molto la parte storica che ho trovato ben fatta (prendiamo la guerra: pur non essendo un tema centrale son riuscita comunque a sentirne l'oppressione) oltre che essere un romanzo che fornisce tanti spunti di riflessione interessanti tra cui ad esempio il colonialismo.
Detto ciò perché non riesco a dargli una votazione piena? Il finale. Mi aspettavo un finale aperto, volevo un finale aperto perché ritengo che alcune storie non hanno bisogno di finali ma nuovi inizi e questo è proprio una di queste storie. Tuttavia mi è mancato qualcosa, e non intendo il qualcosa di sapere fatti specifici ma piuttosto il rivalutare ciò che si è letto sotto una luce nuova. A fine romanzo ho riletto la prefazione sperando di coglierne finalmente un significato nascosto ma questo mi è mancato, anzi mi ha messo piuttosto confusione e ammetto un pizzico di irritazione. Secondo me si poteva osare con questo tocco in più. Ma rimane comunque una lettura assolutamente consigliata a chi come me ama queste storie.
