Seiner is a good story teller who makes me care about what happens to her characters. I do hope that if there is another book about Cannie, that she can have a genuine happy ending with no strings attached...
I love Weiner. Her books are just so much fun to read and I usually cry at some point. A totally pleasurable reading experience.
I was disappointed with Cannie in this book, because although she was a very sympathetic and down-to-earth character in "Good in Bed", in this book she is a neurotic, politically correct, self-righteous helicopter parent! What happened to fun Cannie?! I could understand why Joy couldn't stand her - I couldn't stand her either until the end of the book. However, as with all of Jennifer Weiner's books, this is so well-written, and even if I don't like every character, I can still like the book.
I think that this was a pretty good book. Typical for Jennifer Weiner - good story with some happy events and some sad ones. I would definately recommend reading Good in Bed before this one though.

Not bad, but not one of my favorites by this author. Of course, not being a parent myself, this one laid into the mom thing a bit much for me. However, it was fun to revisit old familiar character's from Weiner's first book, and also to revisit the horror that is a girl's migration to teen years.
I had a very hard time rating this book. There were parts that I loved and parts that I hated. I thought that through most of the book, Joy was an unredeemed spoiled brat. She had all the stereotypical teen negativity with nothing positive. That did change, but it wasn't soon enough. I also thought that through most of the book Candace was whiny and didn't really do much of anything. She was the book's protagonist, and she was very passive the entire time. I don't like that.
But my two biggest problems were 1) She crushed my trust. Anyone who has read this knows what part I mean. It was enough that I don't think I'll read another of her books. I was devastated. 2) From a personal point of view, her reliance on Cannie's views of motherhood were not always easy to read. This makes me not her reader, but doesn't make it a bad book.

This book makes me afraid for my kids to grow up into teenagers. It did however, have a great insight into the different thoughts of kids and adults.
