“It just made me feel, in the pit of my stomach, that there was something about this place that was unwelcoming. That didn’t want me here.”
....we might always be hurting, we might always be damaged, but we were more than that, too. We were the parts of us who had saved ourselves. Who'd had enough. Who'd chosen to live.
After a horrific car accident that claimed the life of her whole family, one in which she was the sole survivor, Margot is placed in a group home. Her stay at the home is short-lived when she is chosen by the prestigious Sutton family to live in their remote estate home. Mr. Sutton is repaying a favor to Margot's late father, who had saved his life many years prior. But there seems to be another reason why Margot was chosen to live with the Suttons. Mrs. Laura Sutton would like Margot to be a companion to the Sutton's teenaged daughter, Agatha, who mysteriously stopped speaking months before and spends the majority of her time sitting in her favorite chair, looking out the window.
Soon after Margot starts settling into the Sutton home she begins to make surprising discoveries about the house and about Laura Sutton. The estate and surrounding garden is cloaked in mystery and secrets of the darkest kind and before too long what seemed like a lucky escape out of the group home has turned into one of the worst nightmares for Margot.
I loved this book. It had just the right amount of intrigue and suspense to keep me wanting to turn the page. Agatha's silence, the remote estate, sprawling gardens and a graveyard locked behind a garden gate add all the wonderful, creepy elements I love in a gothic-esque story.
What kept this from being a five star read for me was I found it very predictable. I figured out many things right away and others I saw coming chapters before they were revealed. However, I didn't have too much of an issue with this because suspense of when Margot was going to catch on to what I had already caught on to helped drive the story for me. I don't give half star ratings or this would have been 4.5. All in all, a great book to start off the horror/thriller genre for this year. Highly recommend.

I have a strong feeling Laura Sutton will be one of the most evil characters and mothers I read about this year. What kept this from being a five star read for me was I found it very predictable. It was a fine book. It wasn’t the as tense or scary as I was hoping, it was very predictable as well. I guessed what was happening about 20% through the book. The ending felt rushed and abrupt.
flew through it so fast and like really want a sequel or a prequel or smth because I NEED MORE BARRETT AND JOHN
The Companion read quickly for being a longer book. Teens will love it. As an adult, I had figured out what was going on long before the main character. Still, reading about Margot's life was interesting and Alender really built the suspense. I couldn't put it down.
3.5 ⭐️ rounded
I thought this book was going to be creepier. It had the potential to be with the grand isolated family mansion, a child with an illness, and a creepy parent. I didn’t think the romance was necessary and the circumstances of it made me uncomfortable. Either way, I was still intrigued on how things would play out and things picked up as the book progressed. As usual, I had my suspicions and wanted to figure it out. The ending was a little underwhelming and I wish we got more between the final chapter and the epilogue, but this was fun to read.
The scene where Margot almost got busted and Agatha throws up on the spot to save them was the best. Their friendship was the best part of the book.

This book was wild and I cannot believe it’s classified as YA. Yes, there were some major eye rolling parts, but overall, I was absolutely enthralled from beginning to end.
.
Margot is the only survivor of an accident that killed her entire family. She gets sent to an orphanage where she quickly learns life will never be the same. One of her dad’s college friends learns about her fate, and offers her a home at Copeland Manor. However, Margot realizes that their hospitality comes at a price—she must be their daughter’s companion. Agatha was a vivacious teen who tragically became ill and is just a shell of her old self. Margot balances her role as “good orphan” while also discovering some deranged family secrets.
.
I was able to figure out what was happening pretty early on and was annoyed the characters weren’t able to. However, the book was so well written, I could not stop reading. Definitely gave me Mexican Gothic and Turn of the Key vibes (but of course YA version). I will definitely be recommending this to my higher-level readers.
