This was the first Roald Dahl book we've listened to (or read). What word could possibly describe this book? Zany? Outrageous? Hilarious? Silly? It's all those and more. Towards the end of the book, Matilda discovers that she has magical powers to move things with her mind. Parents who want to avoid all magic would not enjoy this book, but it was handled in a completely non-witchcraft way. It didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. Matilda uses her power to good advantage! The only other things I'd warn parents about this book are 1) the parents are HORRID towards their daughter Matilda, 2) the father is unscrupulous, to say the least, and 3) the headmistress at the school is, if it is possible, worse than the parents. Matilda devises ways to get even with her parents by playing tricks on them. I certainly hope my children don't try to replicate any of the tricks on me! We all thoroughly enjoyed this book and I recommend it for a light, funny read for kids and their parents.

Such a fun children's book! I've always revered Matilda for her intelligence and I love that Dahl showcased this young girl as a well-liked, curious genius, rather than stigmatizing those who are often classified as nerds. Reading back, there were definitely some jaw-dropping moments—as in, I can't believe I read this as a child and thought the Trunchbull flinging kids around was funny—but Dahl knows how to captivate an audience with his writing and wit. I'm not sure whether I like this book or [b:Charlie and the Chocolate Factory|6310|Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Charlie Bucket, #1)|Roald Dahl|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309211401l/6310._SY75_.jpg|2765786] more, but they're both works of art that imprinted on my childhood immensely!

This is my favorite book. It has been since I was little. It’s so cute and heartwarming, while also touching on some deeper subjects. All in all, a wonderful book.
