My experience with this series so far: I watched the 2003-4 anime years ago, thinking that the Brotherhood version was some sort of sequel. At some point, I realized that it was actually a remake that people claim to be more accurate to the manga. In the intervening years, I also began reading manga in addition to watching anime, so I decided I would read the manga and then watch the Brotherhood anime. I have been putting it off for some time for reasons I don't fully understand myself and due to multiple phases of reading slumps, but I'm so glad I've finally started in earnest.

The thing I love most about this series is the balance between contrasting tones or moods. It's both serious and lighthearted, funny and tragic, and full of both action-adventure and emotional character-building -- but none of these juxtapositions make it feel incongruous.

When I watched the original anime, I wasn't able to pick up on a lot of the foreshadowing. Now that I have some idea of the future timeline of the plot, it is amazing to see how intricately thought out everything is! Also -- and this may be an unpopular opinion -- I enjoy how much shorter the actual fight scenes are. When I'm watching anime, my eyes sort of glaze over during the long battles, but the comic format doesn't lend itself so much to intricately choreographed violence, so that's never a problem here.
