I’m so glad I returned to this! I soft dnf’d this last year because I just wasn’t in the mood for it. This book has A LOT of intricate world building and politics, and the pacing is quite slow, especially the beginning. I do think this is setting up for a complex world/story as I know this is quite a long series. I was finally just in the mood to immerse myself in a long series, and sometimes you just have to let the first book(s) cook! The style of writing is more historical/old-timey than other books I’ve read, so that took some getting used to.
This book has such a unique and interesting take on vampires. In this series vampires (aka Hesperines) are peaceful and good. I loved learning about the vampire lore in this world since it’s so vastly different from anything I’ve read before.
Cassia had wonderful character development in this first installment. She started off very closed-off and kept herself muted in order to be safe. She wasn’t a risk taker and she lacked confidence. Throughout the book, she became very brave and self-assured. She’s intelligent and is finally putting that to good use, and I can’t wait to see how her character continues to develop! Lio is SUCH a cinnamon roll. He’s very different from the typical fantasy MMC—he’s gentle, kind, and even a little shy. I absolutely love him and it’s such a nice change of pace from every other romantasy. I think Cassia and Lio each brought out the best in each other, and I’m excited for their romance to continue.
I personally don’t think this will be for everyone, but I’m looking forward to starting the next book! I think this first installment did a wonderful job at setting up a series that not only focuses on the romance, but also an intricate world full of politics, scheming, and magic

Who knew you could have a kind, cute and veganish vampire in a sexy book? Gotta say I love Lio. He is caring respectful and tries to push the main heroine Cassia to be the best she can be. Cassia also really develops throughout the story and turns into a badass by her own right.

on aurait pu se calmer sur les mots compliqués hein mais ça s’est un peu amélioré sur la fin, en général bof bof

This had potential but oh my godddddd like shut UPP. I don’t need 3 pages describing ONE thing. She just droned on and on. I skimmed the last 30% of the book

Mmm I’m so torn. Why was this book 635 pages? The first 350 pages was essentially them just chatting in a forest and angst, and I felt like all the things happened in the last 60 pages. I think it could have been shorter, sometimes the flowery prose was a detriment to the story- made me lose interest or skimmed or had to re read. I like angst and the backstory of the ppl and such, but also using the fake words for anatomy took me out. The fact that no one sensed her in the keep- like they’re so powerful but she got through all of them? Ugh. But will I read the second one…. Yes. Why am I a glutton for punishment?

Nothing is happening. They weren't lying when they said this book was long. So much thought but I don't feel like the story is getting anywhere because it is soo slow. It say too little detail about what I am curious about and too much about what I do not care at all.

I don’t really read romance so I was a bit apprehensive going into this one especially since I’ve seen a lot of reviews saying it’s very slow. However I really loved the slow pace and leaning about the law and the politics of this world. I’m so excited for that to be expanded in the next books.
