This happens to be my 100th review on Goodreads . I've accomplished this goal in one and half years . I would like to thank my friends here as well for appreciating my reviews . XD
[b: The Name Of The Wind|186074|The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1)|Patrick Rothfuss|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1515589515s/186074.jpg|2502879] is my last read of 2018 . And probably the best one too .This is the best adult fantasy novel I've read this year . Or ever . Period . I've read some exceptional fantasy novels this year - [b: The Final Empire|68428|The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1)|Brandon Sanderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1480717416s/68428.jpg|66322] or [b: The First Law|944073|The Blade Itself (The First Law, #1)|Joe Abercrombie|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1284167912s/944073.jpg|929009] trilogy . But in comparison to The Name Of The Wind those books turn pale .
My name is Kvothe pronounced nearly the same as "Quothe" . Names are important as they tell you a great deal about a person . I've had more names than anyone has a right to .
This is the story about Kvothe , a man with many names such as Reshi , Kvothe the Arcane or Kvothe the Kingkiller . He narrates the story of his life to the Chronicler starting from his childhood . The first book concerns with day one of the trilogy and has the story upto Kvothe's teenage years .
The Name Of The Wind of quite simplistic in it's story but never boring . But don't expect bloody fights or lot of action from you book . This is a slow paced story which you should relish even moment of it . I loved [a: Patrick Rothfuss|108424|Patrick Rothfuss|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1351307341p2/108424.jpg]'s writing style . It's so poetic . Not laden with metaphors . But beautiful . It entranced me from the beginning . A prime example .
It was one of those perfect autumn days so common in stories and so rare in the real world . The weather was warm and dry , ideal for ripening a field of wheat or corn . On both the sides of the road the trees were changing colour . Tall poplars had gone a buttery yellow while the shrubby sumac encroaching on the road was tinged a violet red . Only the old oaks seemed reluctant to give up the summer , and their leaves remained an even mingling of gold and green .
Then there are the characters . Kvothe is a fantastic lead character . He is a prodigy . He has a tragic childhood . In this book the first three stages of his life are narrated . First , when he was a trouper with his family in his early childhood . Second , when he lived on the streets of Tarbean in his adolescence . And third his life at the University .
There are other interesting characters . Namely Denna , Kvothe's love interest . Willem and Simmon , his two best friends . Abenthy , his first teacher . Ambrose , his nemesis . Master Elodin , the eccentric namer .
Another important aspect of the novel is music . I loved how intimately Rothfuss describes the musical parts of this novel . Particularly , I loved when Kvothe played in the Eolian . That really touched my heart .
I love absolutely everything about this novel . The world building was pretty good . The magic system was unique too . Also I liked the setting of the book - The Four Corners Of Civilization .
The novel ends nicely . I'm looking forward to reading The Wise Man's Fear next year .
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings . I burned down the town of Trebon . I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life . I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in . I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during the day . I have talked to Gods , loved women and written songs that make the minstrels weep .
You may have heard of me .

Some of my favorite quotes.
The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind. Pg. 80
My parents danced together, her head on his chest. Both had their eyes closed. They seemed so perfectly content. If you can find someone like that, someone who you can hold and close your eyes to the world with, then you're lucky. Even if it only lasts for a minute or a day. The image of them gently swaying to the music is how I picture love in my mind even after all these years. Pg. 108
It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story. Pg. 658

Okay here we go...
Patrick Rothfuss is a neck beard, and this book is neck beard fantasy.
Now that we have that out of the way.
I genuinely like fantasy, but not this type of fantasy.
I think that Pat is good at writing interesting settings and plot points but the whole thing fell short because he is terrible at writing compelling characters. It was such a let down because there were things that I ACTUALLY DID like about this book. I thought the concept of the Chandrians were super interesting and the mysterious stones and the lore was compelling, and the plot of the story wasn't bad - there were actually a few interesting turns. HOWEVER none of it mattered because Kvothe is so cool and awesome and everyone loves him so every challenged he faces he overcomes guaranteed. There were little to no ACTUAL setbacks for him because it was established from day dot that he was a genius and good at everything so you KNOW he is going to get past it. I understand for the sake of progressing the story obviously our hero needs to succeed but it just felt so convoluted at a certain point because there were no stakes at all.
Kvothe is a self-insert Gary Sue and I find it ironic that the dudes who circlejerk about how amazing this book is are the same ones that disparage female characters for being "Mary Sue". Yes, the book is told from Kvothes perspective so he would of course paint himself in a good light but my god, this book gives no allusion to it being an exaggeration or Kote being a weird egomaniac so it really just feels like he just goes on about how amazing he is for 700+ pages. It also really comes across that Patty holds some weird views of women (if you want another first hand account - find some of his archived blog posts...) and perhaps needs to touch some more grass. Every female character in this book is described as thin and pretty and is so one dimensional it felt pointless. I would have rather this book had no female characters at all and Kvothe just had his harem of men lusting after him.
I don't know.... I was looking forward to reading this book but how the characters were written were just so....underwhelming. Nobody reacted in a normal way, most of the side chars were one dimensional af (Ambrose being comically evil twirly moustachy typa way) and there were no actual struggles or trials for anyone because we knew that Kvothe was so cool it would be resolved immediately.
I definitely will not be reading the sequel, the fact that I know theres a 100 page sex fairy boning montage with Kvothe is enough for me to say no thank you.
I am liberated from this book and can now move on with my life.
