I really wanted to enjoy this, but I think it was just a tad bit lackluster. Had this been re-written for a slightly older audience, I think it would have been perfect.

So I enjoyed this middle grade read a lot more than I orignally thought I would. I liked the sci elements sprinkled in with the dystopian. The beginning and middle were great as far as build up, learning who are characters are but the ending felt like a question mark? The immersion of Spanish and the Latinx identity was wonderful to see on display. So if you have a middle school student I think this could be a great stepping stone into sci fi / dystopian centered novels.

I’m not a huge fan of sci fi but it was well written. Feels like there needed to be more or maybe another book.

This just wasn't for me. I liked the premise and the start of the book, but the rest of it fell flat for me. The characters lacked depth, the themes and the villain lacked nuance, and parts of it were really slow. This is an outlier opinion though, and I can see why other people might love it.

This scifi story is about the love of folklore and storytelling and how that makes us human. While I found some of the characterizations, particularly of the villains, to be a bit one note, the themes were strong.

I really thought this was going to be about a Latina storyteller, so imagine my surprise when it was Science Fiction. I loved that it was cursory on the "why" they're going to space and really focused on the mission itself. The main character has macular degeneration, and she is on the ship illegally since the idea behind the chosen is that they're the best humanity has to offer.
