2 // read for book club. i swear if the tiktok astral projecting sleep into hogwarts community gets its hands on this book their weird little desire for self materialized psychosis will reach an all time peak i am scared to be a witness to.
i have quite a few bones to pick with this:
- WHY WAS NO EXPLANATION EVER OFFERED FOR THAT CANDLE THING?!
- you’re trying to tell me my guy was in LOVE with this gal for years?!?
- okay not like other gals ok judging the ed girlies whilst being miraculously skeletal and gluttonous
- our bestie comparing herself to machiavelli
- the no sleep and only running but ability to look totally fab and fine and preform well in school
- the random diss to religion to be edgy and subversive
- final act conflict gosh
not a #stan. oh well

i really TRIED to like this book but i don’t think it was for me. none of the characters were likable even when they were supposed to be. it honestly felt like i was reading a rejected script of a bad netflix movie but it wasn’t even the type of bad that you can’t stop reading i genuinely had to force myself to read it and it was just not enjoyable.

Better review to come.
Definetly a good and fun read, loved the duel POV in this book and I love Marshall.

I would probably make this 3 1/2 stars. It’s a fun read, and I like the character development and interpersonal workings of the story and families. I also like the ethereal piece of the narrative that was unexpected since I read no blurb that hinted at it. I really had a lot of fun reading it. It’s not life-changing, but it’s a fun read with great characters. The beginning was the tiniest bit clunky, and made me question if I wanted to push through, but I’m glad I did. It’s a fun teenage love story with a tiny twist.

As always, this book gets better with every reread. This is my favorite book EVER and I’m so sad that it’s gone unrecognized for so long.

I will take one Marshall Holt, please and thank you.
This is my first Brenna Yovanoff book, and I really enjoyed her turns of phrase. Her writing style was beautiful. At times parts were a bit dramatic even though not much was actually happening, but overall it was such a smooth, dark, lovely piece of work that I just kept going and going because I had to reach the end. This book was easily devourable.
I wanted to pat all of the characters on the head - they were just going through so much. This book is as much about friendship as it is about romance, possibly even more so. Autumn had to be my favorite character.
I enjoyed a line in the Acknowledgements area about what Yovanoff's friend said about Waverly, because that kept going through my mind as I read it. She reminds me a bit of Dexter or Sherlock.

Fascinating romance between two flawed characters. I enjoyed Waverly's Sherlock Holmes-style sociopathy, and Marshall's character growth. And I think I'd both love and hate a friend like Autumn.
