Based on the blurb, I thought this book would be "wishes + capitalism." And it is. And it's also "wishes + capitalism + classism + government corruption + colonialism + depression + mental health stigma + religious zealotry + regret + secrets + ... a lot of other incredible things." Shubeik Lubeik has so many layers, I'll be chewing it over for days to come. Plus, the art is wonderful, and there are infographics!

A wondrous wonderful book.  I read the whole thing without knowing that the title means "Your wish is my command."  It's a book about wishes but it's also a book about gender and class power dynamics, mental health distress, family, ethics, colonisation, and storytelling.  I loved the book and then, I loved it more.  The illustrations are outstanding, the stories compelling, the characters are believable and endearing and tragic and funny.  I love that it's so Egyptian and so cosmopolitan, that people of different generations within a family look like each other, that the same person at different ages looks like themselves...
This is what a book should be: it takes you away, and it takes you within, and at several points, it goes through your heart like an arrow.  That is what life is like, you say to yourself.  She gets it so right.
