A three star read for me. If I liked slasher movies, it would be a higher rating. I didn't even know what the term "Final Girl" meant until I read the first in the trilogy, "My Heart if a Chainsaw." As usual with SGJ a crazy ride of a story, much dark humor and great themes of gentrification and stolen land thrown in. I did appreciate reading it on an Idaho Lake in the dark in an empty marina in the dark! And such a beautiful chapter written about the drowned town under the reservoir and the ghost of a girl named Stacey Graves. And, he writes the best acknowledgements of any writer I know. Okay SGJ, I will watch one vintage slasher movie this Halloween season. And for those who haven't read SGJ, pick up The Only Good Indians. Then Mongrels. Then Mapping the Interior. Planning to read Night of the Mannequins this week!
I was not a big fan of "My Heart Is a Chainsaw" for a greater part of it, but towards the end, however, I was on board and invested, and "Don't Fear the Reaper" picks up immediately where the first book leaves off and does not stop. We've time jumped just in time to see Jade come home after the events of book 1, to find her friend in picking up the pieces and moving forward and a town that's moved on but still is tainted by its murderous legacy.
I've read both Final Girls Support Group and Final Girls, and THIS book is what I wanted those to be. I understand Final Girls are traumatized and have issues, even Letha has those issues, but both she and Jade have that fire in them, the survivalist fire while still being complete and multi-faceted characters, Graham Jones did a great job, especially with Letha. I'm definitely invested in seeing this trilogy through to its conclusion on "The Angel of Indian Lake" next year.
Hopefully, in that book, the town of Proofrock will put some respect on Jade Daniel's name lol.

SGJ does it again. I loved Don’t Fear the Reaper, just not as much as the MHiaC.
I loved seeing Jennifer’s Final Girl Comeback and this book may have one of my favorite last lines ever.
My only issue is the constant change of POV, but that’s just splitting hairs.

I’m giving this a 3 because there are parts of this story that make up for the very niche references and the fact that it’s beginning to get a little repetitive. Will have to take a break before starting the last book.
SGJ is one of my favorite writers of all time. Maybe even my favorite. Jade Daniels will live in my heart forever and ever. When I'm even sobbing while reading the acknowledgements

"And a thousand men like you can’t even reach up to touch her combat boots."
As a fan or horror, I loved the first book! It was a read that stuck with me for a long while, but I ended up struggling a bit with the sequel.
In my opinion, the constant change in POV (particularly the new characters) made it difficult to follow at times and I kept getting distracted because I tried to remember, if the person was mentioned in the previous book.
A few things were so twisty, that it took me a while to understand what was even happening to begin with and I was still a bit confused when I finished it.
The fight scenes were amazing and I found myself feeling like I was actually watching a movie.
The part about Sheriff Hardy going into the lake with his daughter left me both shocked but also curious, because it was such an unexpected development. I hope, it'll be cleared up in the following book.
