Exactly what you would expect from the sequel of a slasher book. The book starts off like a shot and it never lets up. But this is not some cheap sequel money grab, like some slashers - Stephen Graham Jones writes slasher stories like they're literary fiction.

I originally started this book in the dead of a midwestern winter. It scared the daylights out of me and as that is in short supply in the winter, I tabled it until summer. Now that it’s 80 degrees with 80% humidity, this winter-bound slasher was much more refreshing. Still scary as hell. But with AC.
There’s so much to say about the Craft of this novel and I think SGJ is an absolute master of the limited first person POV as a horror-maker. The book is very cinematic, obviously, but I think his mastery of perspective transcends what would be possible on screen.
The interpersonal relationships tugged at my heartstrings much more than they did in the first book in the series, and they’re truly the driving force here. Jones has a twisted gift with writing despicable yet complicated characters and seeing them interact with those we find more sympathetic is thrilling but at times its own kind of horror. All in all I absolutely loved it and while the first book was great, this is easily my favorite of the series as I’ve read it so far.
