This was truly an emotional roller coaster ride. On Araki’s previous Jojo parts, it was more combat heavy that often focuses on stand battles but here on Steel Ball Run it the characters have much more depth and the themes and storyline are compelling. I wouldn’t say it is flawless or a masterpiece in any way, but it definitely stands out to the previous Jojo franchise. It is, for me the least “Jojo-like” part so far but still the best part for me.
4⭐
un buen comienzo de la parte 7, me han entretenido estos primeros 5 capítulos así que por eso las 4 estrellas. aún así me da pena que sea como otro universo, y que no existan ninguno de los personajes de las 6 partes anteriores

06/09/2022: okay so it's been two years since I read this and I still consider it my favourite part and love the characters, I know this reread is going to destroy me but I wanna write coherent reviews so I can refer back to them and see my thoughts on events and characters, so here we are,, time for my sbr reread, all of these reviews (if I can even call me spewing out my thoughts reviews) will probably have vague spoilers for other volumes in the series so maybe don't read them if ur not caught up, then again its been two years and I've definitely forgotten a lot about this series.
1. honestly sandman deserves to win this whole race to save his tribe, i don't really have an opinion on pocoloco, diego is here but not really. also not a huge fan mr steel right now, but hes v different around lucy, he seems much nicer, i still hate that shes 14.
2. ok i forgot how sick the p7 artstyle was, also gyro is v nice to look at, that one dude was definetly inspired by avdol (p3), and the fortune teller was deffo enya (also p3), i forgot about the show down intro for gyro. i feel like is really shows us his character,, also johnnys first appearance, should've known gyros fate tho it literally says "who was full of mysteries from beginning to end"
"this is the story of me starting to walk" hits different the second time.
3. okay okay so I'm gonna be that bitch, johnny was such a dick, he obvs didn't deserve that but also,, yeah he kinda did, I always say he has the same character arc as lightning mcqueen and I feel like that stems here too,, he was so cocky and overconfident yet has no friends, once again tho gyro looks so freakin good in these panels, i love how theyre both so unlikable rn and yet r my fave jojo duo
4. johnnys determination>>>
i never appreciated how fucking cool sandmans design was before
gyro is so cryptic honestly low key suspicious.. sandman running the whole way tho rather u than me buddy
hate that i laughed at steven steels awful joke tho
5. avdols out already, honestly have no idea what just happened with the steel ball, diego making his first major appearance tho.
overall a decent volume which set up the main characters and gave us enough info to make it interesting but kept us guessing, we know literally nothing at this point.

Well this was interesting. This is the first time I have read Jojo’s but I have watched all of the anime that is out. Part 7 is a reboot of the whole series, which is good because some of the previous stands/ characters were getting a bit boring.
This introduction of Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar was very fascinating. Johnny is a former professional jockey, but was injured and is now paralyzed and uses a wheelchair. I liked his determination to get back on a horse and participate in this event. Gyro is still a bit of a mystery. He doesn’t play fair and has a very interesting ability with steel balls. Also the outfits in this are already wild.
The world for this Jojo’s is very interesting. It's set in the 1800s with horses slowly being replaced by trains and cars. The whole concept of a cross country horse race, that also apparently includes non-horses, is just very fascinating and captivating. I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I am very captivated by this whole world and really want to know what is going to happen next.
Trigger warnings: Johnny was shot and paralyzed. He was also abused by a nurse while in the hospital.

Revisiting SBR after starting it years ago. Trying out the fully colored edition. The colorization starts out a little rough, but by the end of the volume it feels like originally full-color pages consistently. Really adds character.
