A beautifully illustrated story about a young girl caught up in a family history. Jennie's grandmother thieved away the magic of a great and powerful spirit and now that grandma's dead, he wants it back.
Jenn is thus thrust into the paths of strange places, creatures of magic and shadow and occasional gun play. With unexpected allies and one determined cat she sets out, first to regain her family's honor and finally just to find out the truth.
The story was occasionally difficult to follow, but the illustrations and bits of folklore more than made up for it. I loved Bulka, and still wonder just what he was, really.
