This book is crazy and unreal and has an unfathomable number of life changing one liners and I cannot explain what just happened or what the point was but wow I liked it

Reading The Passion was a wonderful experience. I was swept away by Jeanette Winterson's stunning prose, writing style and storytelling. Despite how short it is in length, I was invested and connected to the characters and story. I was so close to rounding this up to 5 stars, but it unfortunately lacked that full emotional gut punch that typically leads me to give a full rating. Nonetheless, I loved this book.
Set in the Napoleonic Wars, this book follows two characters - Henri and Villanelle - whose fates collide leading to an unlikely relationship and journey. The characterisation of Henri and Villanelle was incredible. Winterson was able to establish these characters so well within 150 pages that I have come away feeling a deep affinity to both (Villanelle in particular). Likewise, the dynamic between the characters was expertly crafted; authentic, complex and emotional. It's these characters and their friendship which anchors the entire story.
In addition, this book is a close examination on the meaning of passion. Henri and Villanelle ruminate on what passion means to them multiple times throughout and ultimately, this is a story of passion, of how passion can drive our actions and make us act against our conscience, logic and morals. Henri and Villanelle's passions and perception of passion in general are very different and offset one another, but nonetheless, they are both pushed to extreme places as a conequence of their passions.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing was captivating and Jeanette Winterson is a writer I will absolutely come back to in the future. I loved the uniqueness of the story and the writing style, and the character work was strong. However, I do feel that this book is so steeped in metaphors, symbolism and thought-provoking prose that it requires a re-read. I don't think a book as complex as this can be fully comprehended or appreciated on one read. I plan to come back to it again and read it at a slower pace, taking the time to sit with the words and fully reflect on the language and meaning. I fully expect that a re-read will lead me to up my rating to 5 stars because this book is a true gem.
