Surprisingly funny and entertaining.
“I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our more stupid melancholy propensities, for is there anything more stupid than to be eager to go on carrying a burden which one would gladly throw away, to loathe one’s very being and yet to hold it fast, to fondle the snake that devours us until it has eaten our hearts away?”
“You're a bitter man," said Candide.
That's because I've lived," said Martin.”

White guy travels the world to find himself.
maybe a bit too many characters at times but quite enjoyable
I've read this book at least 10 times since college, and it's always a good reminder when things go wrong that at least I have both of my buttocks.

a little too direct - a little too "once upon a time"
But great point. Definitely great point.

not an enjoyable book by any stretch of the imagination but one im glad to have read.
basically a 'satirical' deluge on why Voltaire's contemporary philosophy is wrong.
some awful things happen in this book. constantly.
but i do think it highlights the pain and suffering in the world. and how perhaps, despite it all there is some hope.
