Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story by Lilliam Rivera

I see what the creative team was going for here, but it just does not work at all. The story comes across as obvious and pandering instead of timely and urgent with no characterization to bring it together or distinguish it from the many other times you’ve read this story in the past few years. The art goes for a Mexican folklore style but instead creates weird linebacker characters who do not have eyes standing in front of empty backgrounds. Seriously, no one in this book has eyes. And it has nothing to do with DC or the original Jessica Cruz or Green Lantern. This isn’t a remixed tale, it’s something else entirely that bears no resemblance to its original beyond a name and publishing company.

A powerful story about current events and the challenge of fighting for a better world. Mostly about people, not superpowers. Just the right blend of message and story and beautiful art.

I really loved The Education of Margot Sanchez, and I think this book just won an award (and that’s why I put it on hold). I didn’t understand the DC connection at all. And the Aztec gods element was weakly done. We definitely need more stories about ICE and undocumented people, but the art and the story here just didn’t do it for me.

I kept expecting there to be more superhero in this graphic novel, but it's a powerful, timely book nonetheless.

A very powerful story with stunning artwork. Despite the trappings that come with the character names there are no traditional cape comic superheroics to be found here, just a sadly all too realistic tale about marginalized people fighting back against their oppressors.

I really really really love Jessica Cruz. She is such a cool character and I'm so glad I'm getting to see more of her in the popular DC world. In this story, she is an undocumented teenager worrying and fighting to keep her family together and safe from the rising xenophobia and ICE deportations in her town. First off, I adored this art. It's much more stylized but it works so well with the story. The depictions of the gods are particularly beautiful scenes. I appreciated seeing Jessica's struggles so clearly represented by these two sides vying for her to join them. I wasn't a huge fan of her friends, with the exception of John, but they were realistically flawed so I can appreciate that. I think this is an excellent example of how superhero stories can tackle timely issues and resonate in any era.

Unearthed is not for superhero fans. However, it is good for building empathy and is an excellent story. I was not a fan of the art because at times the people's proportions looked distorted. However, the use of color was nice. Overall, I liked it, but I never would have known it was a Green Lantern book unless I read the description. (Also, I wish that the description did not say that her dad was captured by ICE - that happened too far into the book and felt like a spoiler.)

Has nothing to do with Green Lantern; also I don't care for the art style.

I liked the connection to the Aztec gods, but don’t expect this to be an origin story or have more than a tangential reference to Jessica Cruz’s role as a Green Lantern in the DC universe, because this isn’t a super hero story.
