I couldn’t stop telling my mom about this book, so that’s how you know it’s really good. There is so much depth to this book and the various subjects it explores that I don’t even know where to begin.

First, this would be an excellent book group book. The book delves into so many complicated topics like poverty’s relation to access to healthy foods and the lead into obesity, federal and state laws surrounding the first amendment and when it’s taken too far, white supremacy and the interplay into anti-abortion proganda, background checks w/ guns, etc. So many interesting discussion points!!!

Another thing I think is unique about the author’s writing style is how she writes in seemingly unrelated anecdotes that eventually connect together to shape a character. At first, I didn’t really like these anecdotes because they seemed to distract from a central plotline, but I actually really love them now. She always made them incredibly interesting and worth your time.

This writer also has lots of witty lines that only stand out to certain people who get the irony. For example, “the homeless people were advised to seek shelter inside [during the winter storm]”. I like that her writing reveals some of her personal opinions at times.

Very well developed characters, even if a couple of them gave me chills in a very bad way. The characters felt like real people that could actually exist. I love the part at the end where
the author says we expect heroines to be helpless because that makes them blameless when revealing how Claudia still had no big desire for motherhood or marriage. It felt like a way to say “f u” to the whole dateline trope the author discussed

Im taking points off for the ending tho…
I felt like there wasn’t any closure between Timmy and Claudia. There was so much potential to develop their story more, even if just one more scene. I also wish there was a climax scene. It felt like everything boiled up… and then came back down with no big event.

Excellent book nonetheless. It’s one that’ll stick with me for a while.

The book started off strong, but then seemed to lose focus and go a little off the rails at the end.

What a great character-driven book that didn't go where I thought it would. I really felt like I got to know this eclectic group of humans very well, and I won't soon forget them.

A bit glum with bits where I laughed out loud. The recognizable absurdity of the sexist racist and the other anti-choice people is just too depressing. The simplistic thinking and inability to take responsibility for their own misdeeds, for their tendency to blame the victims.

She expressed some of the rage I feel about people who are self-righteous about circumstances that aren’t their business nor ones they have any clue about. Dangerously misguided people for whom, once a child is born, the kid is on their own; for whom, they could give a shit about maternity care before and after childbirth.

So, for that, 3 stars. I didn’t read the whole book. After a third, I went to the last chapter in order to be a bit more ready for my book club…
