This is a book that seeks to key the average man deeply into publishing.
Interesting read.

I’ve had to think about this review a lot.

As a general statement, it’s typically quite difficult for me to genuinely like or not be suspicious of books that reference modern day pop culture like Kanye, or social media, etc. I’m not particularly sure why - I’ve been thinking about this recently and I’m not sure if there’s a valid basis for this.

I will say that I still enjoyed the book and was genuinely impressed. I think the character work was amazing - before reading the criticisms and reviews of the books one of my first thoughts was that juniper was a thoughtfully crafted character. There’s a good balance of how much you dislike her and yet kwang still creates room for sympathy. I also think I liked the moral ambiguity across all the characters - made the situations less cut and dry.

I also did like the end in the sense that it was very clear that kwang is critiquing the cyclical patterns of fame and press with the publishing industry.

And I read some criticisms saying they didn’t like the action svene at the end because it felt out of place - but I disagree! I think it wasn’t a horrible addition (maybe not my preferred choice for a penultimate-ish scene) but she tended to write in relatively grotesque and morbid metaphors in the first place…I think the sporadic incorporation of that kind of language made the book interesting and turned the story into something that can be seen beyond just a silly fame seeking racist white woman.

I do only have concerns because I have heard that kwang incorporated criticisms that she received into the narrative - but was relatively ambiguous about whether she was apologetic or ambivalent. But I do overall think that interesting points ab narrative and privilege were explored.

It was funny! Very good + light read!
