I was genuinely surprised by how sympathetic June was, by which I mean that I expected to absolutely loathe her, but could actually see that she was also a bit of a victim of the unhealthy publishing industry. (She was still pretty awful though.) Kuang describes the novel partially as "horror story of the loneliness in the publishing industry" and I could see that.
I did sometimes feel like June lacked a bit of depth. Her depictions of struggling with jealousy, competition and social media were well written, but outside of that she was much weaker. Still, I think this book improved from Babel in this regard.

as much as i don’t love lit fic, this was very good! i can tell how fantastic of a writer kuang is and i am very excited to read more of her works! i feel i will like her fantasy novels much more!
