most of the book was sensational! but the ending was a bit anticlimactic
I’m not going to rate this because I don’t feel I know enough about the history it’s adjusting. The Game of Thrones comparisons are basically because the women aren’t spending the book worrying about kissing boys or talking about dresses a la SJM, but based on my knowledge of Western European medieval history, GRRM does a decent job with mixing history and fantasy. From the reviews here, it sounds like this kind of tramples over Eastern European history, and I’m not going to make comments about things I don’t know enough about. I will say I WAS happy that the female character wasn’t weak. But being a badass at the cost of another culture’s history and heroes is kind of icky, and I don’t know why it wasn’t just turned into a fantasy.
Anyway, I liked her adult books but they weren’t based on anyone’s actual culture. So maybe not something we should do. Or just use your own.

I half listened to this and half read it. The audiobook was pretty good.
I didn't like this book as much as I was hoping to. It just wasn't really what I expected. I like political intrigue in books, but the politics in this book bored me. I felt pretty meh about the whole book until the very end when all the drama started happening. I loved Lada, but as soon as the romance started happening I was just like no, girl, what are you doing?? I really did not like Mehmed. He is trashhh. Like I understand the customs and everything, but there's just a line that was crossed and I wanted to fight him. I kind of want to continue on with series, but I feel like if I don't continue on immediately I'll completely lose interest so I don't know if it's worth it. We'll see what happens I guess.

I can not recommend this book enough. It has a strong female character, wonderful writing, and excellent world building. That said, it is not a fantasy novel. It's an Alternate History/Historical Fiction. So, if that's not your style, this may not be the book for you. I still urge you to give it a shot. I was blown away!
