I am deeply confused on how to feel about this book. For everyone calling this a fantasy...it's fits squarely into historical fiction, heavy on the fiction, but grounded in many historical details/characters.

First of all, for a young adult book, a good half of the story the characters aren't even teenagers. That didn't ruin the story for me, but it's bit irritating. Because of this there's a LOT of exposition. A half a book's worth. The things on the back cover aren't even relevant until around page 70 or so.

I never connected to the characters. Radu was pitiable, but annoying. Mehmed was alright, but never seemed deserving of Radu's worship or Lada's affection.

In terms of girl power, this book's doing okay. Though I'd argue an important part of girl power is being a girl. While this story was gender swapped, Lada clearly didn't want it to be. And I wish that instead of her always wanting to be a boy, and acting like a boy, she could she that embracing being a girl and kicking butt anyway might make you seem lesser to stupid minds, but makes you pretty alright to me. (See Daenerys stormborn, the first of her name, mother of dragons...yadda yadda).

I'm willing to believe it was just me. But this book falls solidly on okay to me and nothing more.

The romance between Lada and Mehmed felt rather forced and I didn’t understand it. Having not read the rest of the series, perhaps that has some significance, but in the context of this book it felt like we had no knowledge of why Lada was attracted to him. Radu’s attraction felt a lot more vivid and tangible.

Five fricken stars!!!! If I could give it more I would. I loved every page of this book. I can not wait for the next book to arrive. I ordered it when I was only at page 20 of "and I darken". I knew that early on that I would love this series. Amazing characters and beautiful story telling. It's been a long time since a book has sucked me in. I just devoured it. And look at that book cover, just beautiful.

So far my favourite book of 2017!!!

DNF Half way through.

Very slow moving but still glad I read this book.

Radu was my favourite and the feelings he was trying to go through when he realized that he does have feelings for Mehmed was so so so accurate especially because he didn't have anyone to help him sort through his feelings.

1st Read(10:12pm):This book absolutely beautiful in every sense of the word and I felt many thing while reading this book. This book was just so crazy and I can’t even begin to say how much I really love this book even though it kind of mad me rage and angry at times.

3 stars
I enjoyed Kiersten White's "voice". Her writing is easy to read and enjoyable. But it was lacking in something. Perhaps more action? I think I was expecting something a bit more gory or dark. Kiersten's writing really does deserve better than 3 stars. Hell, she deserves a 5 if she could spice it up with more suspense.

A female Vlad the Impaler?! OKAY. This is historical fiction at its finest, and one of the best historical fiction novels I've read in quite some time.

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

It's slow with no build up. I can't really see where the story is going. They characters aren't very developed and it seems they are one dimensional and not even a good hate and want them to succeed they are just annoying. The plot isn't a subplot to it and yes it's a character based story but there is usually an end goal and it seems to open.
