Fascinating crime fiction set in the last days of colonial India, featuring Sam Wyndham, detective with an opium habit and an insatiable thirst for truth and justice. But they aren’t always the same thing...

A couple of minor niggles did not spoil a well written historical, crime novel. Would like to award 4.5.
This is the second in the series and the characters and their relationships are more fully developed. I enjoyed learning about a period of history in India that I knew nothing about. The pace is fast and the descriptions of the locations make you feel like you are there. I will look forward to reading the next in the series.

Oh my…I’ve just finished A Necessary Evil by Abir Mukherjee, the second 8n the Captain Sam Wyndham and Sergeant ‘Surrender-Not’ Banerjee series set in India during the 1920,s….and it was superb, I can’t believe it was even better than the first book.
The historical side of the British Raj and India is amazing, I’ve not really been a reader of historical fiction but this series has me absolutely hooked, the way Abir writes is so vivid and enthralling it’s like you can physically smell and feel the story, amazingly talented to be able to do that!
The main characters of Wyndham and Bannerjee are eleven more loveable in this second helping, they have flaws but work so well together as a detective duo, and the added black humour that’s dotted thru the storyline is superb.
The plot was well thought out and very in depth, again Abir is a master of this.
I have to say that after reading 2 of this series, I just adore them, i think these books are probably up there with my favourite series ever!
I cannot think of enough words of praise for Abir and his writing, if there’s one person I would love to meet and have a long conversation with, it’s you Sir, as I feel you would have me mesmerised with your knowledge of all things India during the British Raj.
A definite 5 ⭐️ Read ….if you want books to only immerse yourself in, this series is for you!

Enjoyable second outing for Captain Wyndham
This is the second book in the series of criminal investigations by the British officer, Captain Wyndham, set in 1920's India and the decline of British rule. The plot is excellent and made more interesting by the inclusion of details of the hierarchy and subjugation of the Indian people under colonial rule. Having read both the first and now the second book in this series by Abir Mukherjee I look forward to reading the third novel. Recommended.

A second good installment in this series. A clever plot with enough twists to keep you guessing. The only thing I didn't like is that the author messes about with history. He acknowledges this in the afterword but I found it a pity that he had to change the date that this princely state lost its status to accommodate the story. Admittedly without doing so it would have been a very different story as the royal family was also a fiction. I prefer my historical fiction to be set more authentically.
