Summary: Captain Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee of the Calcutta Police go the princely state of Sambalpore to investigate a murder in British India.
A wonderful read. I liked this book on many levels:
1) I really enjoyed the setting of British India. I think the author got it just right, and not just from the British point of view but from the native point of view too. I enjoyed reading the description of the princely state, the era and the peoples.
2) This was quite a detailed plot, there was a lot of stuff going on and I never felt there was a filler anywhere. Almost every part of the book was interesting. The book was 370 pages long but it didn't feel overly long. In fact, I wish the last part of the book went out a bit longer as that was the part when the protagonist really got into it. Despite the length of the book, the action was tightly focused. Apart from the 2 protagonists, there were a supporting case of about 10 other characters but they were not all crowded together and it was pretty easy to follow each of their plot lines - making for a busy story but not a disorganized one.
3) I thought the author did a pretty good job of fleshing out the characters. They were interesting and I thought they were accurate, realistic and 3D.
Overall, a satisfying historical fiction book on colonial India.
I got this as a free ARC.

Not quite as good as the first of the series, but a good read none the less
I don’t care who is the killer and can hardly stand the main character

Not as impressive as the first one. It seemed like the author couldn't decide on who the killer should be. The Hero, Sam Wyndham made a big deal about finding justice for the victim (the murdered Prince), though he was not incharge of the investigation. But the ending made it all pointless. The Heroine, Annie was annoying. I wish Sargeant Surendranath was given more footage than Annie. He was an interesting character.
