Reading this book was such a refreshing experience, especially after only knowing the story through the movies. What stood out to me most were all the little details that the adaptations either changed or left out entirely. here are some points I found interesting..

*SPOILER ALERT*

• The Darling family was poor, which is why their nurse was Nana, a stray dog they had taken in.
• Mr. Darling once joked by putting medicine in Nana’s bowl, which is why they coddled her afterward.
• Wendy had a pet wolf.
• She gave John and Michael written tests to remind them of their parents.
• The pirates wanted to capture Wendy to be their mother too.
• Wendy’s mother knew about Peter and arranged for Wendy to visit him once a year for “spring cleaning,” though Peter sometimes forgot.
• Peter eventually forgot about Hook and Tinker Bell, since fairies have short lives and he forgets the pirates he killed.
• When Peter returned years later, he was shocked to see Wendy grown up and broke down crying.
• Wendy’s daughter Jane then took her place, asking Peter the same words Wendy once had: “Boy, why are you crying?” The cycle later continued with Jane’s daughter, Margaret..

I genuinely hope that Wendy descendants stop being Peter Pan’s housekeepers with the feminist revolution.
I get why this is a classics but with all this racism and misogyny I’m glad there are so many valuable retelling of this story.

goodness this book is truly full of magic and childlike wonder!

reading it as a semi-adult, i can now clearly see the symbolism of neverland as the imagination, and the recurring themes of death, fear of adulthood, and tensions between rationalism and imagination disguised as magic, fairies and adventure. it’s so interesting to read these stories with a different eye, being able to see the magic and the messages within is truly an adventure in itself!

aspects of this book certainly don’t hold up to modern standards, and i think it’s important to recognise that, critique it, and make sure we are continuously challenging stereotypes portrayed in the text.

I'm not really one to read a book like Peter Pan, because I'm more a girl to read books about sex, drugs, and addiction, because I'm crazy/morbid like that. Haha. But, my book club I'm in, had Peter Pan at the top of the list. I had even voted to read it first, because it was a book I wanted to read although it wasn't really my style of book. At first, I really really liked it. To the point, where I really wanted to read on faster than the book club was supposed to. Of course, I could have kept reading, but I wanted to go at the same pace as the book club. I got so excited the day the book club would add more chapters, and I just couldn't stop reading. But, getting a little further into the book where most of the action/adventure took place, I found myself getting bored. I'm not really sure why, because I'm sure that's where most people would start really getting into the book, but that just wasn't me. I actually began getting behind in the book club (but also that was because I began working a lot...)

The book was okay, and the ending was just brilliant. I really enjoyed reading the ending. So, let's just say the climax, if that's what you want to call it, actually bored me. I'm weird though, and most people DO like this book. I give it three starts, just because of the boring middle. But, then again, I could be the only one who thinks the middle was boring. I don't regret reading it, because I can finally say that I have read it. I was disappointed though.
