Decembers are always rather horrible and require you to cut corners in order to reach the goals you come up with in the spirit of January's new beginnings.
Pirates! Adventure! Old timey racism! Mermaids! Flying! More old timey racism!
I resolved to read more classics in 2017, and my only familiarity with this story was the 1953 Disney adaptation (which has its own set of racial insensitivities). Suffice to say, the story is enjoyable if a bit predictable since the cartoon doesn't stray too far from the source material.
One thing that struck me was how awful Peter really is. He's selfish, impetuous, cruel, and petulant. (So he's a regular kid, I guess) I was never outright rooting for Hook but there were times when I questioned whether or not Peter was worthy of any admiration and then it hit me: Wendy is the hero! Wendy is the one who experiences the emotional growth and maturation while Peter is merely a footnote (albeit an important one) in her story.
There's also an odd dynamic between Peter and Wendy, oscillating between Peter's flirtation with her to his desire for a mother figure. I don't know if that was Barrie's intention but the undercurrent is definitely there.

She asked where he lived. "Second to the right," said Peter, “and then straight on till morning."
