This was more a historical romance than a horror novel. The descriptions of the vampires was really creepy though, so I wish there was a lot more horror! Nena and Nestor have an interesting relationship, though it takes an exceedingly long time for the tension to ease after their falling out. It was also frustrating to see Nena try to hard to be obstinate about both her feelings and her understanding of Nestor’s experience. And she spent way too much time stringing him along while planning on returning to her duties back home, only to have it blow up in her face on both fronts. These characters felt more immature than their age as far as their relationship went, like they regressed once they saw each other again. I really liked the historical aspect of this book and the horror elements, but the romance was such a large part of the plot and yet not my favorite because it was so dramatic. I could get behind the relationship though, I could definitely see the chemistry.

The Vampires of El Norte is a Romantic Historical Thriller perfect for anyone looking to get into Romance, History, or Thrillers.

As the Anglo army matches South into Mexico, childhood friends Nestor and Nena are thrown back together after years apart. Nena yearns to prove herself vital to her home and avoid being married off, Nestor yearns to prove himself worth marrying her and  to be seen as more than a "lowly" vaquero.

Isabel Cañas mixes horrors of the imagination and the real horrors of history, reinventing vampires and weaving them into the long history of the Rio Grande Valley. Along the way, she pairs it with a love so bright it burns away all darkness.

Keep one hand on your heart and the other in a bag of salt as you journey back in time to 1840's Mexico-America to fight the Vampires of El Norte, but remember, the true monsters aren't always the ones who lurk in the night.

2.5 stars for plot, 3.5 stars for characters, 3 stars average of the two

I really liked the premise of the book, but the plot was a lot different than the story I wanted. The Mexican-American war truly is only a backdrop. It barely matters to the plot in my opinion, which I found a bit disappointing. I liked the two main characters, but the Nena’s parents in particular were hard to understand frequently. Despite the wartime setting, the pacing also felt slow to me. Pick this one up if you really only want a light dose of the historical setting and don’t mind a slow-paced read.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was beautifully written and decently paced. I liked the world building as well as the connection between the Yankees and the vampires as an allegory while also being a tangible connection in the story.
I really enjoyed the main characters and especially Nena. She was so quick, smart, and knew exactly what she wanted and how to work the system to get it. I liked that her only flaw was getting the courage to stand up to her parents. It's very realistic especially for the time period she was living in. And Nestor was so sweet and obviously loved her very much from the beginning.
I think the only real issue I had with this book is I thought it would be more high energy and fast-paced than it was. It definitely starts off kind of slow and even the first vampire attack when they were kids was followed up by slower plot points. But it did pick up when they finally went to war a little over half way through. I just wanted expecting a slower start I think, but it was needed to set up the romance plot line.
All in all a really great book and I'm glad I picked it up.

This was book so deeply romantic. Definitely more of a romance than a thriller/horror but I still thought the vampire aspect was eerie and there was some gore.

Both of the main characters are so three-dimensional and I genuinely understand both of their perspectives, decisions, and actions.

My heart really ached for these characters but it made the emotional pay off so worth it.

first read of the year! I marked this as started in Dec just to immediately put it down in favor of some Palestine readings so this truly does count!

The romance was sweet, if a bit fade to black, but the true shine in this book was Nena (super badass), and the folklore. I am a slut for tales and creatures tied to a specific land or people. This delivered that many times over!

I am also a slut for supernatural creatures as metaphors for how white settlers destroyed and warped the land they stole. this book delivered that quite well. colonialism and environmental devastation are not unrelated; we’re seeing that right now with the species disappearing in hawaii, so I like when authors don’t shy away from it in historical fiction.

all in all a fun and surprisingly quick read! I didn’t mind the POV switches for once, as it made the Feelings more juicy. will def read more by this author if I can!

So while reading this I thought it was an okay read but after I finished and got done with it I realized I didn't enjoy it much and that I had many complaints about the book. To name a few, some plot points were never addressed/resolved, we didn't get much lore/info on the vampires, the back and forth between the Mc and ml was kinda weird and drawn out but then happened too fast, and also there wasn't an actual ending. It was open ended, left to your imagination. So the romance didn't feel natural but I did enjoy learning about this world and the characters. I enjoyed the main character using her wits to fight for her future.
