I love reading about Geralt and his adventures with friends. I did find this book to be not as good as the prequel books, but it was still highly enjoyable. I think this was because it went from short story format in the prequels where each chapter had its own fun adventure to one overarching plot that was filled with political intrigue and war. I still enjoyed this book a lot and am very excited to read the rest of the series, especially because I have an illustrated version of it. Highly recommend to anyone that likes fantasy and adventure. The dynamics between Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer and other characters are a joy to read and provide a lighthearted shit eating grin humor between darker themes of eradicating the elves.

Interesting, somewhat unusual pattern of events. I mean that in a good way, rather than the typical mad-dash-last-100-pages after happy a book of nothing route. The pace throughout was fairly even and I enjoyed the sass from Geralt. Ciri has a bit of stubbornness a la Alice in Wonderland. A child that asks too many questions and complains a lot---but she grows a bit. Perspectives from Geralt, Ciri, Dandelion, Tisaia, and a couple others mix it up so you're never stuck wondering how the story will come together. Lots of puzzle pieces moving around.

This is what I would personally call the true opening to the witcher series. It finally encompasses a type of narration where the events are tied together well. The introduction of the political side of the witcher universe was probably my favorite thing.

This book gives us a good look at the character Ciri. There are glimpses of what it happening around the world. It was a good book 1 of a fantasy series but didn't hold my interest as well as the short stories did. There was a lot more discussion than action. There were blips of training.
It was a lot of background and set up that was slow moving and jumping around in the world and timeline.
