I wish I could write like that...

Great characters, slow pacing but that comes with the genre I guess. I like the wordbuilding and can't wait for the next two books to arrive at my doorstep.

This book was an excellent read, well-paced and interesting until about the last 20%, which seemed to drag more than the first 80%. I loved the major characters and the world completely captivated me. I just felt that the ending was a bit flat and seemed to dither more than made sense. With a tighter finale, this would have rated a 5. It's definitely good enough to convince me to read the next book in the series.

This is a review of the trilogy as a whole. It is an interesting alternate history/magical historical realism type tale that almost but doesn't completely deliver on its promises. But it delivers on enough of them that it is still well worth the read.

In general I enjoyed the concept of the "Devil's West" and would have liked to see a more clearly defined magic theory or backstory. The reader following the uneducated protagonist, Isobel, while she discovers her abilities can tend to feel like lazy story telling. It would have been nice if there were more examples earlier in the book about the types of abilities that people have or what is the 'law' of the land. That being said, I did enjoy the more tactile descriptions of life on the road and it made me wish I could grab a cowboy hat and go horseback riding!

Nothing happens. Good characters and beautiful scenery... but nothing in the plot. Bleh. 1.5

DNF at 20%. Too slow paced for me.
Cool idea though. I just can't with so many useless little details and a main character who tries to talk like other people all the time.

Life is too short to read books that aren’t doing it for you, no matter how interesting the premise.
