this was heavy.

1) not really a fan of werewolf power plays, posturing and possessiveness. i heard that it will get better later and i hope they're right because it was kind of getting too much.

2) major warning for on-page sexual assault, and mentioned past CSA. but the worst thing was the aftermath. having the assault be so public and be seen  by so many people is horrifying.

This book had some harder aspects to deal with but all in all, I really love the characters and the way they are portrayed.  Aside from the werewolf/vampire/fairy aspect, I've known people who behave this way and that's not always something you can say about urban fantasy.

That said, there are some serious issues Mercy deals with in this installment.  She's grappling with keeping her independence in a couple of different relationships - something most of the women I know have had to deal with - and she has to deal with friends needing her help but continuously telling her to keep out of it - something Coyote just wasn't ever good at.

The end is the hardest part of all.  If you've ever been in a seriously bad relationship, been forced into anything sexual or know anyone who has, this book is both bad and good.  Bad in that it might bring up some things you'd rather not think about but good in that Briggs makes some points that everyone should understand about these things.

I've read this book multiple times. Doing a re-read of Patricia Briggs before her new book is released in June. This book is a good one. Entertaining, funny, and a fast read. Mercy gets called in to help find a murderer while Zee is being framed for the murder. This book is a kind of watershed for Mercy and moves her character, forever changing her. If you read this review before reading the book, you need to check out the disclaimers. There are multiple triggering things in this book. Saying that, they are tastefully done and are used well.

This book is more fae-centric and you learn more about the fae and the fae community in this novel whereas Blood Bound explored the vampires in their community.

This book sets off a catalyst that will see Mercy grow and change over the next few novels. This series is open-ended and Patricia does an outstanding job of using an experience or issue and exploring that over the next few novels including Mercy's growth and how that affects her relationships with Adam, the wolves, vampires, fae, and others. The love triangle trope ends in this book as well.

Overall, it is a good book, moves fast, and is a fairly easy read. In the Mercyverse, Iron Kissed and Bone Crossed occur back-to-back. Bone Crossed begins with a more detailed account of the ending of Iron Kissed and picks up from there.

I wasn't sure about this one going into it, and I have a lot I would change but the ending really did it for me. It was definitely hard to read (check the content warnings) but the conversation around it was so validating and emotional and thoughtful.
