Loved this story of friendship, mystery, and making new connections told by four different characters. It also has brilliant chronic illness rep.

Every Little Piece of My Heart is a story about friendship, loss and teenage angst. Non Pratt has written for teens brilliantly again. I would describe this as 13 Reasons Why without the death.

Freya is the protagonist of the book who we never hear first hand from. The story is written from the perspective of four of her "friends". One day Freya just leaves, moves to Manchester, no advanced notice to her friends and no contact from her after. One morning, out of the blue, Sophie, Freya's Best Friend has a package delivered from Freya, she is over the moon, Freya hasn't forgotten about her, but when she opens it she finds its not just a package for her. Wrapped in the style of Pass the Parcel Sophie finds a small gift and note for herself and the name of someone else. She doesn't know who this girl is, she never heard Freya talk about her. A game of Pass the Parcel ensues, We meet a gaggle of diverse characters who together try to piece together why Freya left.

PROs - Written seamlessly from multiple POVs with diverse teenage characters. I read this book within a day. Nons writing is fast paced and believable, you can empathise with her characters and want them to be friends with you too.
CONs - Personally, - For about the first 1/3 of the story I had trouble differentiating between some of the male characters - but that is probably a lack of memory thing from me. I would have liked to hear from Freya at the end. Her reasons for going, how she has moved on and why the silence.
Even with these cons the book is a must read for teens and YAs

An often funny, sometimes mysterious read from Non Pratt, whose well crafted novel engages the reader wholly compelling to keep turning the pages to find out along with the main protagonist Sophie discovers just what Freya left and why,
Absolutely beautifully written and one to add to your to read list.

I received this book free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Real Rating: 3.5 stars

Non Pratt is a staple name in UKYA and I was excited to read her latest novel Every Little Piece of Heart. It sounded like the perfect contemporary read and one I would become invested in.

This is ultimately a story of friendship, love, understanding and embracing who you are. Our four main characters Sophie, Win, Lucas and Ryan are all pulled together after each receiving a package from Freya, who moved away five months prior. We see each of them try to understand why Freya sent them a package and how they have adjusted to life without her. I did like that we don’t see any of them interact with Freya after receiving the parcel, but we get her backstory through a series of flashbacks, which, I feel was the right way to tell her story. However, I feel like we could have done with learning a bit more about Freya and her life as in my opinion we didn’t seem to get much of that through the flashbacks. In particular, I would have liked to have gone more in-depth into her relationships with her family, and also her boyfriend Kellan.

With regards to our four main characters I noticed that we got a more detailed image of the lives of Sophie and Win, and don’t get me wrong I loved finding out about their lives and getting into their innermost thoughts, but it would have been nice to learn more about Lucas and Ryan. For example, it would have been interesting to maybe have some flashbacks to Lucas’s life before he met Freya, or learn about Ryan and how he came to be so full of rage.

One thing I will commend Every Little Piece of My Heart for is its amazing diverse representation. We have disability rep, which included Sophie living with Lupus, a chronic illness. I knew next to nothing about Lupus before reading this, but it has encouraged me to research into it. We don’t see enough YA with the representation of a chronic illness so this stood out to me. We also have LGBTQ+ rep and POC within the story. I applaud Non for adding this into Every Little Piece of My Heart and I hope that we get more YA with this amount of diversity.

Every Little Piece of My Heart overall, was a heartwarming story all about acceptance, the meaning of friendship and ultimately learning to love who you are.

This was good! I did really start to hate Freya by the end of the story, I felt like the ambiguous ending left a little to be desired because of this. However, the main character Sophie provided some excellent chronic illness representation, and I really loved how she was portrayed. It was a second string to the story rather than the main plot point, and the promise of a possible future romance between her and another of the central characters really appealed to me, although I wish it had been shipped fully by the end of the novel.

I was completely immersed in this friendship story. So much goodness happening, with diversity and authentic characters and situations and the mystery of Freya. Perhaps the open resolution will frustrate some readers, but it didn't lessen its impact on me.
