Reread was of the new edition with footnotes and bonus short stories. Now that i understand the world and the author better I liked it better on the reread!
Not for me, stereotypical and cringey. Couldn’t make myself care about the plot (or the lack of one) or characters.
nice read, gets spicer as you go on, doesn't quite live up to the hype I was expecting but its still decent spice, somewhat vanilla compared to the writings I find on Tumblr and AO3, will definitely continue with the rest of the series

I love retellings. I really like the villain getting a happy ending type of story.
Four stars only cause I can’t rate it a 3.5
At this point I’ve consumed 3 of Katee’s books. So far this was my favourite.
Would I recommend this book to everyone? Hell no. It definitely has some potentially triggering content and can be a little intense at times with CNC and under-negotiated scenes. If anything I would highly recommend looking at the trigger warnings to double check.
Why would I give this a .5 if I could? Jasmine’s internal monologue about being in a gilded cage began to grate on my nerves around half way through and only continued to get more irritating the longer it went. Topped off with Jafar’s confusing lack of communication as to why he was keeping her out of the public just made this a frustrating dynamic. FFS. COMMUNICATION Y’ALL.
That being said, I was pleased with the resolution to the the plot.
If you plan to read this (or any of her books), just keep in mind that the vibes are smut first and plot second.

Desperate Measures: ★ ★ ★ ★
Katee Robert (Wicked Villains #1)
“Caged birds always crave the sky, Jafar. You’d do well to remember that.”
Serious question: Why was Jasmine ever with Aladdin again?
When Jasmine is sold off to Jafar, her heinous father’s second in command, she’s unwilling to be a pliable subservient doll in the hands of this vile man who has locked her up in yet another gilded cage. What ensues is a story full of passion, heat, and obedience (or lack thereof). It’s a shorter story with a surprising amount of plot too, which I definitely did not expect from this book–albeit, I thought this was just smut. I enjoyed the plot and think it added to the story in a wonderful way.
Jasmine is a delightfully strong heroine with a backbone, one who refuses to accept her new reality with her hands tied (well, in one way) and fights back every step of the way. Jafar is dark, dominating, and delicious. His nonchalant attitude toward everything made him way more attractive to me.
Setting aside the fact that my childhood is definitely ruined after this, I absolutely loved this book. Jasmine and Jafar are oh-so-hot and sinfully addicting. This book is naughty as hell, but I mean that in the best possible way.
I’m a sucker for angst, secret longing, and sexual tension so I definitely wish we could have seen those years before the story starts where the two are caught in that battle of lust, but it was a good read, nonetheless!
Note: The contents of this book are certainly not for everyone. Please do check the disclaimers and trigger warnings before you read it.
