It feels more like a fanfic of the Little Mermaid than an actual original story.

Well this was so much better than I expected it to be!! Mermaids+Pirates+Sea Witches are my FAVE. This was such a classic style mermaid story but still had it's own unique aspects. Such a solid YA Mermaid story!

Pirates, Sirens and a sprinkling of romance. All you need for a good escape from real life. I loved it from the first paragraph and can’t wait to see what’s next form this writer. If you are a fan of little mermaid and pirates of the Caribbean then you will definitely want to read this !
First off — lil shoutout to the narrator! She actually sang the siren song. A for effort (I always skip songs and poems when I read a physical book lmao) But story-wise… it didn’t do that much for me. First time I felt like I might be getting too old for YA??? Honestly, it felt like barely anything happened for the first 80% of the book, and then suddenly everything came flying at you right at the end — complete with a classic cliffhanger to remind you there’s a sequel coming. It felt like a debut, which it is, but still the majority of this book felt very basic imo
Also… I stand by this: the best thing about this book might be thecover . It’s stunning! That being said — I still had a good time! It was a super easy, quick read. Nothing more, nothing less.

As a Day 1 Little Mermaid Truther/Obsessive, this book was meant to find its way to me. I love that it has a lot of notes of the original story, while taking liberties with some of the more frustrating aspects (the Sea Witch, her voice, the MMC lacking a full personality, etc) and improves the story vastly.
Raiden and Celeste are such fun counterparts to Eric and Ariel. And their chemistry sizzles on the page. And I love the more intricate lore of the sirens (and the gods/goddesses) that almost makes them fated mates. It was so fun to experience being human (for the first time) through Celeste’s eyes. And then getting to see her reckon with her past, her feelings (both for Raiden and in general), and her family was such an emotional but also exciting journey.
In the end, I reallllllyyyy enjoyed reading this and I’m beyond excited to see where this story goes. I heard about this book on the TryPod (the Try Guys podcast) because they’re friends with Kelsey, and wow I’m so grateful.
P.S. I took away .5⭐️ because I felt like a LOT happened at the end, and the pacing felt a little off compared to the rest of the book. BUT the actual ending made me VERY excited for a potential second book. I need to know what happens to Raiden and Celeste! So much lore was dumped right at the end. We need to know what it all means.
