It was so hard to get into. Shot by shot of the little mermaid for the first 1/3 of the book. The last 50 pages were good.

Is it cliche? Is it clearly the authors first book? Are some key character motivations shallow? Sure, whatever. But you can tell the author poured her heart and soul into this book, and it shines in lovable characters and a story that is just fun.
