If I had known this book wasn’t a stand alone I probably would have DNFed it. The ending left me completely unsatisfied.
The chemistry between the two main characters isn’t great, and there were definitely pacing issues. Celeste communicates with head nods, gestures and tears for most of the book. When there is little dialogue, it makes the story slow. It had so much potential but I would not recommend.

Honestly… this book had so much potential and just fell a tad flat for me. The biggest issue was Celeste’s characterization with a little bit of a pacing issue.
When we first meet Celeste, the way she acts scream 13 not 17 years old. Towards the end, she does act much more like you would expect a 17 year old to… but it was spoiled by the early characterization. Her motivations were also just… confusing. She gets in trouble for saving humans so agrees to kill the human she saved. But every time she has a chance to kill him, she saves him, then berates herself for being weak. There just wasn’t enough consistency with her actions.
The initial plot was a little slow. the first part of the story when they were first on the ship. The ending was wildly action packed.

I kind of enjoyed this book but not really. It’s basically The Little Mermaid. Seriously, the first half felt like an adult version of that story. Then the second half gave me To Kill a Kingdom vibes. So overall, I’d say it’s a mix of those two.
While reading, I had to keep pushing myself to stay focused, which isn’t a great sign. Parts of it were pretty boring and honestly, I don’t think I’ll remember much about the plot or characters in a week. None of the characters stood out to me and the storyline felt very familiar, not original or surprising in any way.
That said, it’s a solid debut, just not as good as I hoped it would be. The cover though is absolutely stunning and definitely deserves some credit for that.
