This story started out really strong, I was excited and had high hopes for where it would go, but it didn’t really go as far as I hoped. This was an easy to read story and easily held my attention. I wouldn’t call it a retelling, it’s more of an addition to the Norse mythology that already exists, it fills in a few gaps to the already well known stories but doesn’t really add much more. I really wished this witch did more- new battles that weren’t originally apart of the Norse world or was a trickster herself that no one ever figured out - I wanted her own story along with this one. But she really doesn’t.

Let me say first, I still enjoyed the book, I would have not finished it if I didn’t, but I was angry reading the last 1/3 because I wanted better. Maybe if my expectations weren’t so high I would have enjoyed the whole book more... maybe not, but for the sake that I would, I will give some ideas of what to expect.

The book is about a witch and the trickster Loki falling in love and having this side life that the well told stories never knew about him... it’s about Ragnarok, the coming of the end, how it was brought on. The premise of this story is great, it’s why it held my attention, waiting for some adventure, and when the second half of the book came, when she went out to discover herself and her power, that’s when it felt pointless. She did nothing interesting ever, either sat in her cave waiting or walked a village selling medicine pretty much sums it up. This is the great witch who has more power than anyone? That’s what the story says, but I never saw it myself, you just have to take the narrator’s word for it. I felt like it was a waste of a powerful witch. Thor had power and he used it, always, why can’t I read a story about an all powerful witch doing something with her power? Something fun, something good or something bad, I’m not picky! The love story was fun at first too but the second half went somewhere else entirely, I love reading stories about gay couples but I didn’t believe this one. I think the author had a good idea but didn’t let the story develop long enough before calling it good. IMO

But, still, it held my attention enough to keep reading. The first part was fun, the second part was a little more disappointing (weather my expectations where too high or not). In the end the Sparks of the original Norse story here and there was enough to still enjoy it.

This is a great retelling in Norse mythology focusing primarily on Loki, his witch-wife, Angrboda, and family he has with her leading to Ragnarok.

I think I would’ve liked this book more if it was sold to me as the tale of Angrboda and her prophecy of Ragnorok rather than a “Norse Mythology based lesbian love story”. Overall not bad, but definitely not my favorite.

It is a very solid mythological fiction. I liked how the author braided together stories from the Edda's to form a "believable" theory of why all sorts of stuff happened.

But I just could not understand why Angurboða would give Loki so much time and attention. Their relationship just wasn't believable at all.
