Absolutely, hands down, favorite book of the year so far. Heart wrenching, beautiful, fun!! This story is about a witch, Angrboda, and the story of her falling in love with Loki and having three strange children with him. It is an epic fantasy about destiny and love. In it, we follow Angrboda as she risks the wrath of powerful gods, protects her children, and forges friendships (particularly with a cool giant huntress named Skadi). I loved it. I cried at the end because it was over. If you read Circe and want something like that, this is perfect.

I loved this protagonist and her strong sense of self, even when her self stretches over time. She’s so much fun to get to know and I would love to have spent more time stuck in time with her. The timing sometimes skates past weeks and years, and for good reason, but I get the feeling her sub-story would be amazing to hang out with.
I like Loki as well, and appreciated that, while we don’t always understand why people do what they do (or agree with what they do) Angrboda takes time to contexualize others’ behaviors and is even forgiving.

Usually, I love a retelling. However, there was something about this one that did not quite click for me. The connections were just not there and I disliked the unearned time skips. Time in general was an odd situation here because despite talking about eternities and how every small moment mattered, there was not a good sense in how some of the relationships formed. Angrboda was a particularly hard one to love because I wanted her to do better and be more active. There was also a great line from Loki about stories being the only thing we can pass on, but otherwise it was a very middling story.
4.5 I was frustrated with the beginning and the gendered power imbalances but the author earned it, took the story exactly where it needed to go and I cried at work lol
