This book was not aimed at me. Perfect for people trying historical fiction who enjoy light dramatic romances with a cast of characters. Great for giving teenagers black chacracters who have their own dreams they strive for despite class, gender or race. Opens the doors for an intrest in historical fiction and black history.
However i felt the themes of colourisim, civil rights and feminism we just got a taste of and I wanted more. More historic detail and time spent with theses chatacters where we can live snd breathe Chicago in 1910 and see the highs and lows of these characters lives. But then this book would be more of a historical epic with romance as a sideplot, which is not the story the author wants to tell, even though that is what I want to read.

This was my first historical fiction book and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. I looked looking at 4 very different Black women going through the woes of love in 1910 Chicago. It was a very different time then and even though 3 of them came from wealthy families they still didn’t have the same plight. From societal pressures to family over involvement, these 4 woman having the decide if they are going to listen to everyone else or what their heart truly wants. What the heart wants can come with a price though. I also enjoyed the inclusion of the Jim Crow movement and how it did or did t sway the women’s decisions.
I believe I’ve found my way into a new genre and I cannot wait to read the next installment in November.

Discovering that this is the first in a duology instantly made me 82% more satisfied with the parts of the story we're given here. I definitely would've liked the last scene so much better if I had known — having all of the Davenport siblings together at one table is something I was hoping for throughout the entire book and when it finally happened I couldn't properly enjoy it because I kept thinking "wait, there's not nearly enough book left to resolve any of this!" So... keep in mind that this is only the first half of the story and you'll be much more likely to enjoy this fascinating historical about a wealthy Black family in Chicago in the early 1900s and the lives, moments, and movements that intersect with them.
