It’s clear to see the goal Sweeney Boo had in mind with this comic but it just didn’t land for me. I think the fast pace was a detriment to this book. Mindy’s, the protagonist, process doesn’t feel believable or relatable. Which was the main reason I got this comic. I wanted to see myself and be able to relate. Maybe that made me set to high of a standard. I think it was very cliche, down to the name. Also, I know body dysmorphia can effect anybody with any body but I really couldn’t relate to Mindy’s struggles because of her body shape. She has an hourglass shape which is incredibly sought after right now so it made her feel disingenuous to me. A scene of Mindy looking in the mirror and seeing a bigger version of herself, or something of that sort, would’ve helped me believe/empathise with her struggles more. I do have to say the art and drawing style was beautiful though, the author is clearly very talented. I would still give this author another chance based on her character designs alone.

First, PLEASE LOOK INTO THE TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE READING!

Secondly, I feel like this could’ve been better if it wasn’t fast paced. It would’ve been better if we got more from the story and if the resolution wasn’t so fast.

This was an absolutely stunning graphic novel about 27 year old Mindy who is struggling with body dysmorphia and bulimia. Throughout the book we see Mindy deal with various snide comments about her body, her appearance and her eating. It was good to see it demonstrated how these comments that often people think are harmless can have a long lasting impact on someone and their mental health.

I really liked the parts where Mindy went back and looked at some of the aspects of her childhood and upbringing which probably kicked off the majority of her struggles.

I felt a little let down by the ending in a way and wanted to see a little bit more of Mindy's development as a character shown, without spoiling anything, it felt like she was just settling.

What really makes this one stand out for me is the quality of the illustrations. They are simply beautifully done. Bright and vibrant when it's needed and dark and moody where relevant.

A fantastic graphic novel which would be a great starting point for anyone want to look at eating disorders or body dysmorphia, but also a great one for just learning to accept yourself and love yourself for who you are.

I’m so thankful for authors and artists who tell stories like this one. It wasn’t as emotionally resonant as I expected, but I can still see this book being a mirror for so many readers. I didn’t fully love the magical device used in the story, but it served its purpose.

It was cute! I struggled with certain parts and wanted a little more self love but I liked it overall.
