Absolutely poignant and emotional novel featuring topics of oppression, racism, sexual violence and poverty. This novel was heart-breaking and I really struggled to put it down!
A novel that everyone should read at least once, stayed with me long after I finished reading.

Literally nothing happy happens in this book. Which, in my opinion, is really nice considering the main characters, the gothic setting, and the fact that if this novel was real life, there wouldn't have been a happy ending. Lutie and Bub are loveable, and thrust into a most unforgiving environment. Naturalism. The gothic. Abuse and assault warnings.

This book was well written! It made me feel for the characters and cheer for them as they struggled through racism, sexism and social classism. This story takes place in Harlem in the late '40's, yet resembles some of the same issues that still occur today!

This is my second time reading this classic. Even though The Street was written in the 40’s, Petry’s writing is super engaging and accessible. It had been awhile since I last read it, so the ending was quite shocking. Definitely a must read.

This is a story about the American Dream - one that calls that Dream for what it actually is: Bullshit. And for those in poverty, especially Black women in poverty, this dream was never meant to be dreamt by them at all.
