2.5 stars.

I was excited for this book to come out but it had a hard time deciding which genre it wanted to be part of. Fantasy or historical fiction? So many questions. It never really committed to the fantasy genre and the pacing was weird.

Not my fave...

This book really couldn't decide what genre it wanted to be. Arranged marriages to society parties to pioneer life to courtroom drama. The pacing wasn't great and the first half was pretty dull and a lot of the second half felt unexplained. I guess the other books explain a lot of the gaps but I don't want to have to read three books to explain things that are major plot points in the first.

The cover of this book was what really made me want to read it. But once I started I just couldn't find the will to take it up consistently so I decided to listen to the audiobook. Much better for me.

I liked the story but somewhere about 70-80% through it I was just like jeez when is it going to end. The world was imaginary but definitely based off of real world places and I would have preferred if the author just used the actual names. The characters were great. I could definitely get a feel for each ones' personality. I hope that the next book about Mira is written better.

I'm thinking of classifying this more as historical fiction as it's not very fantasy. it seemed a little more rushed through things; the glittering court training was over about a quarter in the book though it was a span of several months. Unfortunately the side characters arent really fleshed out as I assume they are the companion novels to this, but not fleshing them out here doesn't make for me wanting to know these stories. i didn't find myself wanting to read this, but found myself continuing hoping it'd get more interesting.

Okay so I went into this book not knowing anything except that Richelle Mead wrote it. I was so surprised with how much this book made me feel and laugh and cry and honestly I love it. It is fast paced and action packed, but it also has romance that makes your head spin. I never wanted to put it down and from the start I knew this would be a favourite. - Jan 17 2017

This book started out great. I loved the idea, the romance, etc. But, it started to mainly split into different stories at the end. This book could have honestly been one solid book instead of a series like it's going to be. I don't like how this book focused on this one girl and then ended with a mystery about another girl so that we know the next book will focus on her. I wish it was just one fluid book.
