Short and powerful, with a great balance of tragedy and dark humour. I may have missed some of the more subtle jibes, but definitely a classic for all intents and purposes.

3.5, czytałam to jak Anka Karenina, czyli średnio uważnie, myśląc trochę o czymś innym. Możliwe, że gdybym bardziej się skupiła, byłoby całe 4. Powieściątko o toksycznych modelach męskości i okrucieństwie inicjacji z wojną w tle, ciekawa przestrzeń symboliczna, troszkę humoru.

This is the story of Miloš Hrma, an apprentice at a sleepy Czech railway station. They are in the midst of German occupation during the second world war. And there he watches the trains.

Trains that carry prisoners.
Trains that are used by Germans for surveillance.
Trains that carry cattle and sheep, alive and dead.
Trains that carry ammunition.

There is a scandal in their station. There is his love in that station.
But he got a problem in making love to his sweet heart.
He had attempted suicide because of that.

He needs to be a man.
He needs to show his love that he is a man.
This bothers him.
Day and night.

In the end he overcomes his fears.
He is not a virgin any more.
And he is more courageous now, and wants to do more.
What he does forms the rest of the story.

Hrabal is a master story teller. He laces all his stories with a deep sense of humor and dry wit, that makes you smile, even when reading about someone's dilemma. A breezy read that can be finished in hours.

Short story written in the '60s by a Czech author. We follow the last hours of Milos, a young train dispatcher back to work after a suicide attemps in WWII Czech countryside. Nice characters description. Good account of life during Nazi occupation as seen through the eyes of a sensitive man in his twenties.
