I learned so much from this book that I didn’t know before. These guy wrenching stories of fiction based in fact, while hard to read, feel so necessary for more people to learn and understand about the things that happen in the world. I’m grateful to have read it and I hope many others do as well.

I found the narrative not the best but the story was otherwise really compelling, moving, and, despite the many tragedies, really beautiful and hopeful.

This one left me feeling flat.

When compared to Allende's other work, the way life with all it's complexities and contradictions just burst off the page... TWKMN is paint by numbers. It is moving, yes, hard to read knowing that it's all based in fact, that the things examined happen all too frequently. But... for all the sentiment expressed it didn't feel REAL for me.

I felt no rage or grief or anger, not in myself nor in the characters themselves. It all felt rather superficial in my opinion. Despite this, the characters still manage to be memorable. I cared enough to be invested in their futures. But I don't think they will linger with me beyond the pages.
