This book had an interesting premise, but lacked in so many ways. I’m honestly not sure why I kept reading. I guess I wanted to see what would happen? But there isn’t really any world-building or backstory, no distinct setting, the characters lack personality and, except for a few instances, their voices all sounded the same. It is clear from the beginning who has secrets impacting the rest of the group, so it was predictable. The murderous plan itself was not well flushed out and did not have any contingencies, so it wasn’t satisfying to read about any planning or execution of the treasonous attempt. I didn’t understand the relationships everyone became involved in and they felt mostly irrelevant and insta-lovey without substance. The relationships didn’t add anything to the characters or the plot either, other than people feeling more betrayed (I guess? I didn’t feel the rage/hurt through the writing). The writing style was clunky and very “tell” and not “show,” so I couldn’t get invested in the snippets of interesting things we saw. Though the little bits of mystical creatures, ancient relics, murder, and treason kept me interested enough to continue reading despite the story being not well written. Considering how long this book was, very little happened with the plot. I guess I still want to know what happens in the next book, but I’ll probably just Google it… I should have DNFed this book.

This story made me feel as if I was watching an actual action packed mystery thriller with a surprisingly shocking, and unexpected plot twist.

This story is definitely very unique because it is about a group of bad people that each have their own motives, and tragic back stories with  some of them being unforgivable acts against society.

The author Mrs.Corland's world building, storytelling, characters, and plot twists are all written to perfection.

This story is definitely not for everyone, and is written towards an adult audience only. The authors   themes, and trigger warnings can be found in the beginning of the book.

My favorite character is Sora because no matter what happened to her whether it was good or bad she never stopped caring, and continued to fight despite all odds against her.

The plot twists toward the end of the story was shocking, unexpected, and definitely left more questions than answers. The author just announced the next books release date for January 7th,and I will be reading it.

Five Broken Blades is the first book in the Broken Blades trilogy by Mai Corland. This book was so much fun and quite an intense read (check trigger warnings). It’s a fast paced book full of morally grey deadly liars, hilarious banter, action, and plenty of plot twists. I truly came to care about each of the POV’s in this book and can’t wait for the sequel called Four Ruined Realms!

I loved every minute of this book. I couldn’t put it down. Not to mention the book itself with the sprayed edges is just beautiful. This book had me second guessing all the main characters with every chapter and the ending 🤯. It’s going to be a long wait for book 2!

4.5⭐️ Wow, nothing could have prepared me for how this book ended! I was really enjoying the story but the ending was just the cherry on top which brought it from a 4 to a 4.5 for me!

The characters were so funny too! I was really rooting for the relationships that were unfolding among the way. This really was a unique story and I cannot wait for the next book!

This book has LGBTQ+ representation, enemies to lovers, grumpy sunshine, diverse characters and all the plot twists you could ask for!
