A cozy fantasy about friendship and hardship, in equal parts, with a bit of drama around a succubus-turned-sofa. Reminded me a bit of something Nina Kiriki Hoffman might have written. Somewhat amusing and definitely heartfelt, but overall I missed something from this: more tension, more stakes, I don’t know.

For the lack of a bed and torment by chronic pain, Noémi suffered insomnia. Until she got a free sofa. Which having someone died on it. But the sofa was so soft that she was willing to sleep in its lap. Forever.

With the same author John Wiswell, "For Lack of a Bed" has a similar vibe to "Open House On Haunted Hill": a cute scary eaten-in-a-bite story. The story really convinced me that there are people willing to take risks for a good sleep. I can feel the misery tormenting the main character, the feeling of constant pain throughout the body all day long, the lack of money and a bed leading to constant insomnia, denying her proper rest to escape the pain and recover. Since then, I feel extremely sympathetic when I see her clinging to the suspicious sofa.
"For Lack of a Bed" may go in a darker direction, but the author seems to prefer spreading positive energy. The origin of the sofa is quite funny. Noémi finally had some consolation. If there is anything that needs improvement, the world in the story could be a little more enriched.
