I thought this was such a beautiful read, mostly because I really loved the illustrations. I loved the way using one colour highlighted the textures and the blue theme matched the melancholy tone of the story perfectly - it's slow paced and it's a very personal coming of age narrative, dealing with some heavy themes.

Lushly illustrated, a pensive coming of age book that touches on belonging, mental health, friendship, family and art. Read this if you are ready to dive into a memoir that will demand empathy and holding space for swirling emotions.

Powerful. It's always so heartbreaking to me that I can read a graphic novel in two hours, that took the author/illustrator a FIFTH of their life to create.

Booktalk:

Caught between her American upbringing and her Korean roots, Jung-Jin Lee, who goes by Deborah, is struggling with transitioning into high school. She is struggling with a mother who has unrealistically high expectations and falters between supportive and abusive. Deborah ultimately discovers her love of art and makes a new friend. This book is sometime hard to read but is a powerful look into what being an immigrant and a high school student can be like.

As someone who's used to seeing Deb's colorful posters online it was interesting seeing that this graphic memoir was all black and white. It was absolute goregous and heartbreaking and I'm so so glad the library had this book. I hope more people who need to feel not alone can come across it.

It was interesting thinking about the author’s experiences alongside my own depression, loneliness, and difficulty with friendships and dark emotions in middle and high school; however, some of the scenes near the end of this book felt blunted to me, and the story lost its life and confused it’s narrative. I loved the art style, frequently pausing just to look, and I like that picture takes the place of text in many places, unfolding and moving through image alone. I was mostly disappointed that it didn’t feel enough for me, it didn’t always become real.

picked this up and read a bit, wasn't in the mood. returned to it later and devoured it in one sitting. cried so much. didn't realize how much i'd relate to it, growing up as a mentally ill child at a similar time. tender and weirdly nostalgic for a childhood fraught with conflict (and good stuff too). don't have the same background as Lee but I really related to that disconnect with one's heritage as diaspora. gorgeous and devastating art (though the softer blue ink choice was a bit hard on my eyes personally). I really wish I had this when I was a teen.
