Another historical fiction where the writing is just giving nothing. The story was very predictable from the beginning which is not necessary bad if its written a well-crafted, interesting or compelling way, but this was not. It follows three women from one family who all have a unexplained magical affinity with animals and a shared unluckiness for encountering abusive men. I found it boring despite the heavy themes and often graphic imagery of violence, death, abuse and child loss. The men were almost all charicatures of evil and the boilerplate female empowerment message lacked nuance. The way the author handled the characters who chose for/against abortions (there were multiple instances) veered into territory that seemed antithetical to what I thought was the point of the book. I would have prefered more time exploring the nature magic and fewer abuse scenes.

This was fine, honestly very average overall, but a quick read. I thought the writing was good, especially for a debut novel, and I liked how it wove together the three women’s stories even if it was a bit predictable at times. It was definitely super light on the magical realism/witchy aspects, I kind of wanted more from that. As someone who is not a fan of pregnancy in books, this just had a bit too much of it for me to ever enjoy my time with it, and some of the descriptions really got under my skin. It also just started to feel a little overwhelming with the amount of trauma these women went through, like it literally just kept getting progressively worse as the book went on, and all the women in this story went through an absurd amount of trauma and the men depicted were the actual worst examples on the planet. It’s a pet peeve of mine when I feel like authors use trauma as the ONLY plot device and only way to develop their characters (it happens with women and people of color all the time) and I just think there are much better stories to tell and women are so much more than their trauma.
