I really enjoyed this book - I'm a big fan of books with multiple perspectives over generations so that was something that really drew me to this book. Loved the magical realism and feel like the author balanced the "witchy" and "real" beautifully.

Obsessed with the cover for this too - it's so beautiful. And the quote at the end really resonated for me:
The connections between and among women are the most feared, the most problematic, and the most potentially transforming force on the planet.
Adrienne Rich

This book is dark though and the women do all experience trauma so wouldn't recommend reading before looking at the content warnings.

This follows three women of very different generations across parallel stories as they learn to harness their witchy connection to the earth. While I really enjoyed this it was hard to listen to at times, as there are graphic descriptions of domestic abuse and the narrator for the character who experiences most of it does a really excellent job putting a lot of panic and stress into her performance. There's not really a ton of character development outside of each women realizing she's better off without most or all of the men around her, but IMO the story isn't really about the individual women, it's more about the family legacy and how it comes to manifest in each new generation.

I am sick and tired of the “women must survive horrible trauma from men to be a fully realised and whole woman”. I barely got any sense of plot from these women other than being survivors and being able to give birth.

Felt like all the rage I have of living in the misogyny that built and holds up the patriarchy was expressed and given an outlet in this book.

I had been seeing this book everywhere and I probably should have checked the trigger warnings. I highly recommend you do and I wish more people when advertising books did that.

The extremely graphic triggering part of the book doesn’t come in till like a third of the way through.

I liked the switching perspectives especially in the beginning. The chapters were short and there was a nice pace to the book. Toward the middle and end the chapters were long we and started to feel slow. The book was a bit predictable toward the end.

I did like the author’s writing style (although sometimes the dialogue got a bit cheesy) and would consider reading her future works.

What really irked me and took me out of the story is at the end Kate’s abusive ex-husband finds her and instead of immediately calling the police or her friend (which she later admits she should have done) she concocts this more complicated plan to hide in the attic.  I just didn’t understand why she didn’t ask for help earlier in that crisis.  Also I’m not sure why she came down from the attic, I would have phoned for help as the animals were attack Simon. I don’t intend to victim/survivor blame but rather point out that as a reader it took me out of the story because I was thinking “what are you doing?”
