I decided to try to re-read the Hercule Poirot books in sort-of order this year. I have read a few, but not all, and in light of the movie that came out this past fall, I thought it would be fun. This one, I remember now though, is not my favorite of the Hercule Poirot mysteries. It was just harder to follow than some of the Poirot books, and not quite as motivating when it comes to page-turning. But it was still a good mystery (as if it could be anything but a good mystery, coming from Agatha Christie...).

An excellent mystery! There's a really interesting difference in tone between this and Christie's later work- it is dedicated to her husband at the time, and it lacks some of the cynicism of later stories. This one is full of love, and the mystery unfolds in a way which pays tribute to that love, in way very different to, for example, Death on the Nile. Nevertheless, Christie's eye for human nature is evident here, and, as ever, her plotting is exquisite. Each turn and twist (and there were a great many!) fits perfectly together in the end. And Hercule Poirot stands at the centre, the master detective, smoking knowingly, hinting at the most important clues, dismissing red herrings, coyly putting together all the pieces far ahead of everyone else (his contest with Giraud, a celebrated young detective who dismissed Poirot, is very satisfying!) I really loved this one

The second Poirot. I think she overcorrected a bit from the first one. The trader doesn't need to have any special knowledge but they're are one or two too many red herrings. Even that's okay. The most annoying thing us the dynamic between some of the characters, especially the sexes. Hastings purposes marriage to a girl whose name he doesn't even know just because she's pretty. Ditto a couple other characters.
