What an intriguing, heartbreaking read. I really loved the way Church let us into Lorraine’s life, her teenager emotions and what it is like to be raised with zero knowledge of reproduction. The Girls We Sent Away was a really wonderfully written story based on the Baby Scoop Era (which has always fascinated me) and Lorraine’s story is not unusual to the time period.
This was such a good read for book club, women’s group, even something I would consider reading with my daughter when she is a teen - this book is a yes in so many ways. The characters are deep, the social norms from that time in the south are very well represented and the ending will break your heart. Well done.

Wow, this story had me engrossed from the start. My heart broke for Lorraine and the other girls at the maternity home. I wish the story had continued longer, did she ever forgive her parents?? Did Clint ever face any consequences, or he just walked away Scott free? It made my blood boil that men were just able to walk away like nothing happened.

This book is set in North Carolina in the 1960’s. The main character is a “good girl” who comes from a family who thinks their reputation is more important than almost anything else. In a time when a girl/woman is blamed for “getting herself into trouble” & the man holds no accountability, this family sweeps a problem ‘under the rug’ by sending their daughter away. Her dreams & ambitions are dashed and she is forever changed. I would have liked a more developed end to the book.
